Today we actually have good internet. After an interesting journey we have arrived in Strasbourg. It wasn't in our plans, but finding places to stay where we wanted to go proved quite difficult. Note to the Hubby: if you want to go somewhere, and be guaranteed getting there: Book it! haha.
I love that man, and our adventure in Europe has been incredible. We stayed in Spain, and are now in France...next we hope to go to Switzerland...and then Germany and finally The Netherlands!
I've decided I'm not fond of France, southern France in particular. Northern France is growing on me. We stopped in Montpelier, and it was filthy, loud and just inhospitable. The street shows were (mostly) good. One guy was playing the marimba and I so wanted to go and give him a show. It's been a few years since I've played, but I'm sure I can do something more than the same 2 minute song for an hour. heh.
From Montpellier we left for Strasbourg. It looked nice on a map and it was the only train left for immediate travel...so we took it! A few hours waiting in the city, and finding dinner (a very non-noteworthy dinner) a couple beers and then to the train.
We get on the train and after what seemed like an hour there was an announcement in French...and a bunch of people leave the train. We ask the young girls in front of us what it said, and it seems the train is delayed. No telling how long. Our only source of communication and translation (the girls) left after about an hour, so after some time more I go off to try and find someone to communicate with. I found a nice German named Oliver, and he told me a bit more of what was happening, and that there was no place to purchase beer or wine near the station. We all needed a drink...it was now about Midnight, and the train was still going nowhere.
I found a conductor to talk to, and he said it may be an hour or two more, but they were working on it...Jon and I both couldn't sleep it was too bright and people were chattering all around us, so we played some hangman and boxes and then. Finally. the train began. After hours of sitting. Of course they passed out some waters first, and apologized in French...
We tried getting some sleep, and after more delayed stops because of the already ridiculous delay...we arrived in Strasbourg! They gave us breakfast at one of the stops near Dijon...oh how I wished my dinner the night before had some of that on it...and then a cold lunch provided here in Strasbourg, which we still haven't touched...not sure how potted meat sounds after a 14 hour train fiasco.
Luckily Strasbourg is BEAUTIFUL! A part of France I just might like, it seems there are many German-speaking people here. So I think we'll get around better. We left the train station and went searching for a room. We considered going straight through to Zurich, but we didn't want anymore of that train.
We wandered the streets a bit, then found this nice hotel...in the center of town. With a nice concierge, and a market where we will buy breakfast, since it is not included. Tee hee. So the train ride was the pits, but the good thing is we were given two meals....a place to sleep...and will be refunded most, if not all of our money! Yay for electrical problems! haha. You will probably never hear me say that and mean it again.
Now we are off to go to the market, and I will update the previous days later, if I have time. I hope you are enjoying the journey. I know we are!
